Private transfers from Maastricht Aachen Airport
Maastricht Aachen Airport is a small regional airport, served mainly by holiday and seasonal flights mostly to Mediterranean and Turkish destinations. Because the schedule is concentrated, several flights often land close together, and the taxi rank and bus stop can be busy for a short while before going quiet again.
Booking a private transfer in advance removes that uncertainty. You choose a sedan, minivan or VIP vehicle, pay a fixed price per vehicle with VAT included, and receive instant confirmation. The day before pickup you receive your driver's name, phone number and number plate, so you know exactly who to look for.
Your driver tracks your flight and waits if it lands late, which matters at an airport where a delayed return from a sunny destination can easily push your arrival into the late evening. Plans can change too: cancellation is free until 24 hours before pickup.
The airport's position is also useful. It lies in the triangle formed by Maastricht, Aachen and Liège, so a single booked vehicle can take you across a border just as easily as into the Dutch city centre.
Arriving at the airport
There is one passenger terminal, so there is no risk of waiting at the wrong building. The walk from aircraft to arrivals is short, and on a quiet day you can be through in well under half an hour typical exit time.
Whether you pass passport control depends on where you have flown from:
- Flights from Schengen countries (for example Spain, Portugal or Greece) normally arrive without a passport check.
- Flights from outside Schengen e.g. Turkey, Egypt, the UK pass through border control before the baggage hall.
Baggage reclaim is in the same building, with only a few belts number of belts. After collecting your luggage you pass customs and walk straight out into the arrivals hall on the ground floor arrivals hall location. Facilities are modest, so if you need cash, a snack or a SIM card, it is worth sorting this before you fly.
Because the terminal is compact, your driver will be waiting only a few steps from the arrivals doors, rather than at a distant car park or meeting zone.
Getting to Maastricht, Valkenburg, Aachen and beyond
Most journeys from the airport use the A2 motorway, which runs north–south past Beek towards Maastricht. Typical drive times in normal traffic are:
- Maastricht city centre (Vrijthof, Markt): about 15–20 minutes, 10–12 km
- Maastricht Centraal station and Wyck: about 15–20 minutes
- MECC Maastricht (exhibition centre): about 15 minutes
- Valkenburg aan de Geul: about 20 minutes, 15 km
- Sittard-Geleen: about 15 minutes, 12 km
- Heerlen: about 20–25 minutes, 20 km
- Aachen, Germany: about 35–40 minutes, 35 km
- Liège, Belgium: about 35–45 minutes, 40 km
Allow extra time at weekday rush hour around Maastricht, where traffic can slow on the approach roads and inside the city. The historic centre has narrow streets and restricted zones, and your driver will set you down as close to your hotel as access rules allow. For hilly Valkenburg and the Heuvelland villages, a private vehicle saves you a second change of transport with luggage.
Public transport versus a private transfer
There is no train station at the airport. The main public transport option is a regional bus Arriva line 30 that links the terminal with Maastricht Centraal station and Sittard, running roughly twice an hour on weekdays, less often in the evening and at weekends. The ride to Maastricht takes around 25–30 minutes, after which you may need a local bus or taxi to reach your hotel.
The bus is a reasonable choice for a solo traveller with light luggage arriving in the daytime. It becomes harder when:
- your flight lands late in the evening, when services are thin
- you are heading to Valkenburg, Aachen or Liège, which means further changes and possibly a cross-border train
- you are carrying holiday suitcases, golf bags or a pushchair
- you are travelling as a family, where several tickets add up
A private transfer takes you door to door in one step. Your driver waits for you even if your flight is delayed, and the price is fixed per vehicle, not per person, so the more of you there are, the better it compares.
Where to meet your driver
Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall, holding a sign with your name. Because there is only one terminal and one arrivals exit single arrivals exit, you will see the sign as soon as you come through the doors from customs.
The day before your pickup you receive the driver's name, mobile number and vehicle plate. Save the number in your phone before you fly. If your bags are delayed or you are held up at passport control on a non-Schengen flight, simply send a message or call so your driver knows you are on your way.
There is no need to update us if your flight is late: the driver tracks the flight and adjusts the pickup to the actual landing time. Once you have met, the driver will help with your luggage and walk with you to the vehicle, which is parked just outside the terminal short-stay car park in front of terminal.
Travelling with family or a large group
Many passengers at Maastricht Aachen Airport are returning from beach holidays, often as families or groups of friends with plenty of luggage. Choosing the right vehicle makes the trip home much easier.
- Sedan: suits up to 3 passengers with standard suitcases.
- Minivan: for larger families or groups of up to 7–8 passengers, with room for bulky bags, pushchairs or sports equipment.
- VIP vehicle: for business travellers heading to the MECC or meetings in Maastricht or Aachen who want extra comfort.
Please mention child seats, a folded wheelchair or oversized items when you book so the right vehicle is sent. If your group is too large for one minivan, you can book several vehicles to leave together.
For events such as the Maastricht carnival, TEFAF at the MECC or André Rieu's summer concerts on the Vrijthof, the city fills up and roads in the centre may be closed event road closures. Booking early and allowing a little extra time is sensible on those dates.
